Lava Beds 100 & 50 Mile Ride

  • Zach's Bikes 831 Main St Klamath Falls United States (map)

A highly under-utilized resource for cycling, the Lava Beds and the Tulelake Wildlife Refuge are host to spectacular views. Pair this with pan flat roads and a more temperate climate and you’ve got yourself a great early season century.

This is an out and back ride from the store with water and food stops almost perfectly spaced at 25 mile intervals at Merril and the Lava Beds Visitor Center.  Road conditions are pretty much entirely worn in chipseal and are flat with some mild hills on the approach to the Visitor Center.  The pace of this ride will vary depending on who shows up but if you’re doing the Century ride (not the short ride, see below) expect to be doing paceline work at around 17-19 mph.

We will be tentatively holding a shorter 50 mile route that will meet and end in Merrill. We will take the shuttle van (meet at shop at 10 am) or simply plan to meet at the Merrill Water tower at 10:30. We will cancel the short route if less than 3 people RSVP. If you are genuinely interested in this ride, please RSVP! The pace for this ride will be 16-18 mph.

Plan to bring plenty of food or buy some at the Merrill Gas station. Two water bottles is usually enough since you several opportunities to refill. Bring money or your park pass if you plan to go into the park.
